An amphibian is a cold-bloodied animal that has a backbone and can live on both land and in water. The word "amphibian" means "two lives" because they start as babies in the water, breathing with gills, and then change, or undergo metamorphosis, to grow lungs and legs to live on land. They have smooth, moist skin that helps them breathe, and they often lay their jelly-like eggs in water.
