A desert is a barren area of land that receives less than 20mm of rainfall per year. Deserts are found on every continent and can be described as either hot or cold. For example, the Sahara is a hot desert in North Africa where temperatures can reach as high as 50 °C; and Antarctica is a Polar desert where temperatures have been recorded as low as -89.2 °C
