Insects & Bugs

Insects are small creatures with six legs, a body made up of three parts (head, abdomen, thorax), antennae and an exoskeleton. The word "bug" is often used to mean any insect, but scientifically, it only refers to a specific group of insects called "true bugs". True bugs are insects with special straw-like mouthparts they use to suck up plant sap or other liquids.

Creatures such as spiders, scorpions, mites and tics are not insects - they are Arachnids. The easiest way to identify an arachnid is by counting its legs: arachnids always have eight legs and two main body parts, not six legs and three body parts like insects. They also don't have antennae or wings.

Other "bugs include gastropods, like slugs and snails, and annelids like earthworms.
