The polar regions are the areas surrounding the North and South Poles, where the climate is extremely cold and covered in snow and ice and temperatures below freezing all year round. The sun doesn't set in the summer and doesn't rise in the winter, leaving the region in darkness for months. There is very little in the way of plant life in the polar regions, although there are some distinct species that have adapted to the cold.
