A river is a large body of freshwater that flows across land, usually starting in mountains or hills and ending in a larger body of water, such as a lake or the ocean. Rivers are homes to many kinds of plants and animals. Rivers bend, or meander, as they flow, eroding the land, and over long periods of time they form valleys and canyons.
