Roman Numerals

The number system we use today is thought to have originated from India. It was adopted by the Arab and Persian mathematicians who called these numerals Hindu Numbers. Later, they became know as Arabic Numbers when they were introduced to the West by Arab merchants traveling to Europe.

If you had lived in Britain two thousand years ago, you would not be using the numerals we use today. In Roman Britain, you would have used Roman Numerals.

Roman Numerals consisted of seven letters: I, V, X, L, C, D, M and each letter or combination of letters represented a value.
