The 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clocks

There are two types of clock.

An analogue clock uses the 12-hour clock system. If we are writing the time using the 12-hour clock, we must write a.m. or p.m. to show whether it’s morning or afternoon

A digital clock can use either the 12-hour or 24-hour clock system.

The time is usually represented by four digits, with a colon to separate the hours and minutes.

You can work out afternoon times as 24-hour clock times by adding 12 hours to the 12-hour clock time.

The Value of Time

Time is, in fact, invaluable, since it the measure of a person’s success or failure before the Lord of Mankind.

Allah, the Most High, gives such importance to time, that He swears by it in Surah al-‘Asr. And when Allah swears by something, it means that thing is something great and significant.

The Messenger of Allah taught us that we must not waste time and to use it to attain good deeds at every opportunity. He advised:

“Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth before you become old, your health before you become sick, your wealth before you become poor, your free time before you become too busy and your life before your death.”

[Musnad Imam Ahmad]
